Fairies are magical creatures who live in forests and mountains. They are known for their beautiful wings and long hair.

Some fairy tales even include them as characters. Fairies are often depicted as cute little creatures who enjoy playing pranks on humans. 

In reality, they are mischievous beings who are capable of great magic. There are various depictions of fairies across film, thus in this article, we will discuss movies about fairies. 

Shrek 2 (2004)

The Fairy Godmother is one of the best antagonists, voiced by Jennifer Saunders. This movie shows that not all fairies are good. The Fairy Godmother is quite manipulative and fearsome.

Yet, her one-liners and the relatability to her failing diet makes her still loved by a lot of fans. 

The Fairy Godmother is most remembered for her very catchy musical number.

It is a great twist on the typical fairy nature, as when we think of fairy godmothers, we think they should be good. Yet the Fairy Goth Mother shows that not all fairies can be nice and good. 

The Dark Crystal (1982)

Kira is a fairy that comes from Jim Henson’s Dark Crystal world. She is technically classed as a Gelfling, but she has a very fairy-like appearance. Her wings help solidify her fairy-like appearance. 

In this movie, Kira is one of the few living members of another species. She is a very resourceful and kind character. Without Kira, then Jen’s mission would have failed, it’s thanks to Kira that they succeed. 

Sleeping Beauty (1959)

Sleeping Beauty introduces us to Flora Fauna and Merryweather. The three fairies take on the responsibility of looking after Princess Aurora and helping Prince Phillip rescue her.

These fairs bring a lot of comedy to the film and the main driving force that keeps the plot moving. 

On the quiet, the three fairies do a lot in the film and could be considered the unsung heroes of the film as well. 

Maleficent (2014)

Angelina Jolie takes on the character of Maleficent. We discover the backstory to this villain that we first meet in Sleeping Beauty. We get to understand why this fairy has such a cold heart and what makes her go evil. 

Again, we get to see a much darker side to fairies, that maybe a lot of people don’t think about. 

FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992)

This film is set in an Australian rainforest that is the home to various fairies. The fairy known as Crysta shrinks the logger known as Zak to the same size as a fairy. 

This film is all about putting a stop to the evil fairy Hexxus and to save the rainforest.

FernGully has a strong theme on the environment and keeping it safe. Fairies are at the heart of this film, as they try to save their home from utter destruction. 

Thumbelina (1994)

A classic film, about a girl who is tiny and falls in love with the fairy prince known as Cornelius. Unfortunately, Thumbelina is kidnapped, and the fairies led by Cornelius come after to rescue her.

In the end, Thumbelina takes us on a journey to the fairy court, the vale of the fairies, and we even see Thumbelina herself become a fairy. 

A great fairy movie for all the family. 

Tinker Bell (2008)

If we are talking about movies about fairies, then of course at some point Tinker Bell was going to make her way onto our list. We first met Tinker Bell in the Peter Pan films.

Yet how she has her own films, where we see her beginnings and what her life was like before she found Peter and the lost boys. 

Tinker Bell has never been a normal fairy, she is always pushing her boundaries, and trying to learn something new.

However, in this film we don’t just meet Tinker Bell, we also meet all her friends, who all have their own and unique talents. 

Tooth Fairy (2010)

Dwayne Johnson stars in this film, as a hockey player who tells a young girl that there is no tooth fairy. He is then brought to the fairy world and has to serve two weeks as punishment for lying. He then becomes a tooth fairy. 

This film is a little different, as you wouldn’t expect this character to be a fairy. 

This movie, about fairies, isn’t as magical as the others ones on this list, but it is still just as enjoyable to watch. A fantasy comedy film that isn’t your typical fairy film.

Ella Enchanted (2004)

The character Ella, played by Anna Hathaway, is given the gift of obedience by her misguided fairy godmother.

We then watch, throughout the film, the effect her godmother’s gift has on her life. This movie has a similar storyline to the classic fairy tale of Cinderella. 

In this movie, we meet the house fairy, Mandy, while we are in search of the fairy godmother Lucinda. A charming film that shows the effects fairies have on these people’s lives, with Benny being transformed into a magical book. 

Tooth: Do You Believe In Fairies? (2004)

Tooth tells the story of a very young and yet feisty Tooth Fairy that lives in Fairytopia. However, teeth have lost their ability to do magic.

Tooth is tired that everyone has forgotten about magic and decides to give all the money away, thus bankrupting the world. 

Tooth has decided to do this, just two day before Christmas. Deciding that she must undo what she has done, Tooth alongside a team of other fairies goes in search of Mrs Santa Claus.

You may not think a fairy film could have a Christmas twist, but this one has, and it works well to get you in the Xmas mood.
